# \[#TIOF] TU Fellowship IETF 126

{% columns %}
{% column width="58.333333333333336%" %}

## About

The IO Foundation, is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join our cohort of Fellows for the upcoming [Internet Engineering Task Force meeting (IETF 126)](/activities/current-season/season-2026/07-july/ietf-ietf-126.md), to be held in Vienna (Austria) from 18th to 24th July 2026.

{% hint style="warning" %}

## NOTICE

Please note that the **\[#TIOF] TU Fellowship IETF 126** will run on slightly different dates than IETF 126.

Check the [Timeline](#timeline) below for more details.
{% endhint %}

#### Understanding the IETF & IRTF Ecosystem

Every IETF meeting serves a dual purpose. It hosts both the IETF (engineering) and the IRTF (research) under one roof during the same week. This structure exists because long-term Internet research must directly inform practical engineering.

During the event, you can fluidly cross between two types of sessions depending on your background and interests:

* **The Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) Sessions, *****The Academic Gateway*****:**\
 The IRTF focuses on the long-term evolution of the Internet through a theoretical lens.\
 Rather than writing strict engineering standards, its Research Groups (RGs) explore foundational, multidisciplinary topics like Human Rights Protocol Considerations (HRPC), privacy-preserving technologies and decentralized architectures.\
 This is an ideal, natural entry point for students and educators.
* **The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Sessions, *****The Technical Foundation*****:**\
 The IETF is where those research concepts eventually transform into practical reality. Through technical Working Groups (WGs), engineers and developers collaborate to write the Request for Comments (RFCs) that keep the global web running today, operating on a philosophy of "`rough consensus and running code`".

The Fellowship will include:

* **Two preparation sessions (see** [#timeline](#timeline "mention")**)**
* **Remote Attendance at the IETF 126 Hackathon and Meeting, which will be conducted from Saturday 18th to Friday 24th July 2026.**

### Why join this Fellowship?

The Internet requires a multidisciplinary approach combining programming, system design, academic theory and policy thinking to evolve responsibly.

* Connect Academia with Global Industry:\
 See firsthand how global Internet research is peer-reviewed and advanced by international experts during the research sessions.
* Advocate for Rights-by-Design:\
 Learn how to apply TIOF’s Data-Centric Digital Rights (DCDR) Framework to both research concepts and technical protocols, ensuring future internet architecture protects citizen privacy by design.
* Enhance Your Professional Portfolio:\
 Gaining hands-on exposure to global bodies like the IETF and IRTF provides a highly respected distinction on CVs for both academic and industry career paths.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://discover.theiofoundation.org/activities/current-season/season-2026/07-july/tiof-tu-fellowship-ietf-126.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
