[#TIOF] Training Bytes 2026-02-08 JAKARTA
TechUp Academy
About
On the occasion APRICOT 2026 happening in Jakarta, Indonesia, The IO Foundation organizes a training session on the topic of Network Operator Groups (NOGs) and to explore the latest operational technologies and best practices presented during the summit.
This Training Bytes session will focus on practical approaches and implementation strategies for enhancing user safety and privacy directly within network operations and infrastructure.
Participants will:
Implement Secure Protocols: Learn about the most crucial, recently ratified IETF protocols (e.g., DNS over HTTPS/TLS, BGP security extensions) and how to deploy them effectively on live networks.
Operationalize User Protection: Identify common network vulnerabilities where operator-side configurations can immediately improve user protection and data integrity (e.g., reducing metadata leakage).
Identify Relevant NOG Practices: Learn which technical practices and configurations are currently being prioritized by Network Operator Groups (NOGs) and the APNIC community for optimal regional security.
Engage with the Community: Explore effective strategies for engaging with the APNIC community and other key operational forums (like the APRICOT Peering Forum) through the Data-Centric Digital Rights framework.
Prepare for APRICOT: Learn how to actively participate and extract value from the upcoming APRICOT 2026 workshops and hands-on labs, focusing on real-world case studies from the Asia Pacific region.
The session aims to equip network engineers and system administrators with the knowledge and configuration tools necessary to build and maintain secure, privacy-preserving networks that prioritize user rights in the global digital landscape.

MORE TO COME!
What will you learn
Key Standards and Operational Bodies
This session examines the organizations that most directly impact the day-to-day operations and security of networks in the Asia Pacific region:
1. Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
Role: The primary body for developing and publishing Internet standards and protocols (like TCP/IP, HTTPS, and BGP security).
Relevance to APRICOT: While they don't govern, their output (RFCs) is the technical blueprint that every network operator must implement. Our session focuses on implementing their security and privacy-enhancing protocols. *
2. APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre)
Role: The Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for the Asia Pacific. They manage and distribute the Internet's core resources (IP addresses and AS numbers).
Relevance to APRICOT: They are the governing authority for the resources you operate with. Their policies directly affect routing security (RPKI), IP address transfers, and IPv6 deployment—all core topics at APRICOT. *
3. The APRICOT Community & Network Operator Groups (NOGs)
Role: These are local and regional bodies (like MyNOG, IDNOG, JANOG) that represent the Network Operator's perspective. They distill global standards into practical, localized best practices.
Relevance to APRICOT: This community drives the adoption and refinement of technical standards across the region. They are the target audience and the primary source of operational knowledge shared at the conference.

💡 Session 1
Understanding Mapping the Ecosystem: Who Runs the APAC Internet (And Why They Meet)
The "Big Three" Explained: The distinct roles of APNIC (The Registry), APNOG (The Organizer), and APRICOT (The Event).* Governance vs. Operations: How technical standards from the IETF are implemented and discussed by network operators (NOGs).* The Language of Resources: Simplified explanation of IP Addresses (IPv4/IPv6) and AS Numbers—what they are and why their scarcity/security is the central policy issue.* APNIC's Policy Cycle: How attendees can follow and influence policies regarding IP resource allocation and security (e.g., RPKI). * Outcome: Fellows will recognize the key organizations and understand the core resource terminology used in plenary sessions and hallway conversations.

Understanding Translating Rights to Routing: Security, Privacy, and the APRICOT Agenda
* The IOF Framework Bridge: Using the Data-Centric Digital Rights framework to identify parallel technical issues on the APRICOT agenda (e.g., Privacy Secure DNS; Anti-Censorship Routing Security).* Hot Topics in Jakarta (2026): Introduction to key technical security issues and their impact on users: BGP Hijacking, RPKI Adoption, and IPv6 Deployment.* Engaging with Engineers: Strategies for effective communication with network operators and technical experts during workshops and social events.* APRICOT Navigation Guide: Practical tips for the fellows: how to select relevant sessions, where to find policy meetings, and whom to approach (e.g., APNIC staff, NOG leaders).* Outcome: Fellows will be prepared to identify relevant sessions, translate their policy concerns into technical language, and confidently engage with the APRICOT community.
